A Place to Let Your Voice be Heard

More and more often, we are hearing of employers and insurers who are trying to incentivize weight-loss among their employees or beneficiaries. For example, a $25 reduction in your monthly health insurance premium if you participate in a wellness screening and/or show progress in reducing your weight.

We would like to know if such an incentive would such an incentive motivate you to address any weight issues?
Does your employer have such a program?  If so, in what form?
Have you participated? If so, was it successful?  Did your employer or insurance pay for your weight loss treatments as a covered benefit?

We would also like to hear if any employers or insurers have programs that are punitive (penalizing you for being overweight or obese).

The OAC was recently contacted by an individual who expressed concern to the American Greetings Corporation about an online e-card that she felt was offensive toward the obese population. Below, please find an excerpt from the American Greetings Corporation’s response:

Thank you for writing to American Greetings Corporation regarding one of our “Alternative Humor” cards. We sincerely apologize for offending you; that was truly not our intention.

We realize that humor is very subjective, and we try to please all of our card-buying customers. Our alternative-humor cards feature a form of absurdist humor, which is certainly not meant to be taken literally or seriously, and we understand that this creative direction does not appeal to everyone. Different things make people laugh. You can love a style of humor or abhor it. Factors as divergent as age, culture, geography and education make some people howl in delight and others averse to them entirely.

Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. Our Creative Team members meet daily to evaluate overall quality and taste guidelines on a card-by-card basis for new concepts. The artists and writers in our Creative Studio will give your comments full consideration as they develop future humorous card programs.

What are your thoughts on the response from American Greetings?
Do you feel the card is offensive?
